Every capture gets a proof. Not every capture needs the same one.
The level is stated on the proof, in words. It is never a hidden score. Higher levels rest on more independent evidence and on stricter requirements for the device.
Basic
Every capture receives a proof: qualified timestamp, device statement, integrity of the recording. Sufficient for routine workflows.
Witnessed
An independent second device corroborates presence and moment. The proof no longer depends on the capturing device telling the truth about itself.
Certified
Witnessed capture on attested hardware. Reserved for disputed, high-value or regulated decisions.
Why a second device changes everything
A single device can only vouch for itself. If it is compromised, every statement it makes is worthless – including the statement that it is not compromised.
At the Witnessed level an independent second device, present at the scene, corroborates the moment and the presence of the capture. It can be the counterparty's phone at a handover, the assessor's device at a claim, or a fixed device installed at a site. The capturing device no longer has to be trusted about itself.
The witness is optional. Where none is available, the proof is issued at the Basic level and says so.
Nothing is silently changed
Once issued, a proof is never silently rewritten, and its level is always stated openly – for the reviewer, for the counterparty and for a court.
Three weights of line.
The VeraCapt mark is engraved in three line weights – fine, medium, heavy – for the three levels of proof. The green crossing is the moment the two sides meet: the capture and its witness.
